Women's History Month is an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. It is celebrated in March in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, among other countries.
The celebration grew out of a weeklong celebration of women's contributions to culture, history, and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women's Day.
The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women's History Week celebrations the following year.
In 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as "Women's History Month." Since then, each president has issued an annual proclamation designating the month of March as "Women's History Month."
The National Women's History Alliance selects and publishes the yearly theme for Women's History Month. The theme for 2024 is "Providing Healing, Promoting Hope: Powerful Women Changing the World." This theme honors the countless women who have dedicated their lives to healing communities and societies.
Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month

Learn about the achievements of women throughout history. There are many great books, articles, and documentaries about the lives and work of important women.
Support women-owned businesses and organizations. This is a great way to show your support for women's economic empowerment.
Attend a Women's History Month event. Many communities host events such as lectures, film screenings, and panel discussions throughout the month of March.
Volunteer your time to a cause that supports women. There are many organizations that work to improve the lives of women and girls.
Share your own story. Tell your friends and family about the important women in your life.
